Sony NEX-7 Digital Camera – Video Review

The Sony NEX-7 Digital Camera is a great addition the wide array of high quality compacts in the Camera market today. Because of its powerful features all packed in a very svelte design, its suited for enthusiasts looking for a reliable compact that takes photos that will definitely turn heads. Beginners will also find this piece of equipment a very worthy investment and they could start exploring the world of photography with features such as Easy and Intelligent Auto. For the professional shutterbug though, there is enough in here to keep their photography palette satisfied.

There has been a lot of suspense about this camera and wether it is even possible to live up to the hype that has been spread like wildfire online. Of course on paper it looks amazing. The build, the design, the features, the video capability, the new sensor, the built in OLED EVF (which is super duper uber FANTASTIC), and the tri-navi controls are everything the enthusiast market has ever wanted in a small take anywhere camera. Hell, I suspect the NEX-7 may even create more of us crazy gear heads because even when Uncle Joe sees this camera he is going to want one.

It has a way of making people wonder what the hell you are shooting with, and when they learn about it they seem to want to own one for themselves. This has happened to me three times while out and about shooting with the NEX-7. BUT the real question for me while shooting was to determine if it did indeed live up to the hype and was worth shelling out $1200 for the body alone, which to be fair is $6800 less than a Leica M9-P and you can still mount your favorite Leica, Zeiss ZM and Voigtlander M mount glass on to! Hell, you can mount just about any glass to this NEX-7, which makes it pretty damn special right there.

Why Students Need Shorter School Days

This is a teen-written article from our friends at Teenink.com.

Students have a limited amount of power in school, which is one of the main reasons for cutting classes. Students feel as though schools try to contain them and that they are not able to be themselves. They are forced to sit in a chair for a certain amount of time and to quietly complete assignments. The thought of this recurring activity results in students caring less about school, which eventually makes their grades decrease. By shortening the school days, students wouldn’t be as distressed about going to school and their grades would be higher. Fewer school hours per day would permit students to have enough time to study, complete school assignments, participate in after-school activities and be able to get to bed by a decent hour.

The school day is primarily seven hours long. Most of us have a wide range of after-school activities. Some participate in clubs while other have jobs or are on sports teams. Some participate in more than one after-school activity. By the time we are finished with the school day and their activities, there isn’t much time for them to complete homework assignments and study for exams. Instead, we result to quickly completing our homework and we do not receive any educational value from it. Also, we may not have time to study at all, which would result in failing grades.

Long school hours put much pressure on students. We may tend to slack off which could be harmful for their education in the long run. In classes now, the lesson usually doesn’t start until about ten minutes into the period, once the students have settled into their places. This is also because students feel that if they are late to class, the time would go by faster. If about ten minutes were cut from each class, the time would add up. The students would most likely go to their classes on time, because the class would overall be shorter and able for them to handle. A shorter day would leave more time for us to enjoy their lives and not have to rush through activities or assignments. We would be able to do everything at a slower and calmer pace rather than rushing. By cutting time out of the school day, the students’ education level would not be hurt. The students would be able to retain the same information whether it was taught within an hour or half an hour.

Many people could say that since work hours are long, that school hours should be long as well. This view is not necessarily true. We starts out in school and then work our way up to a steady job as we get older. Therefore, at one point everyone will be working long hours. Students should not have to work as long as some adults do. Also, some jobs do not require work to be done after work hours. We the students, on the other hand, have to continue working by completing their homework assignments.

A shorter school day can only be seen as a positive change. Both students, teachers and administrators would benefit from the change. Teachers would be able to have some free time and be able to educate students. The students would gain more time for fun while also having time to gain an excellent education.

Pam Allyn: Reading Scores and Wars: A New Solution

Recent data shows that over the past two decades the reading competency of American students has lagged. These findings demand immediate action. With all the many programs our teachers adopt and school districts purchase, and with all the debate over different approaches to teaching reading, it is urgently time to reinvent the teaching of reading, acknowledging that it is the key to improving students’ overall success in school, impacting every single subject area and our children’s future success in the workplace.

This, the 21st century, is the century of the critical reader. The 21st century reader is absorbing the world on a screen, on a mobile phone, on an ereader. More than ever before, every child needs not only to decode words and not to simply answer an adult’s questions such as “Who is the character in this story?” but more, much more: to navigate the cacophony of words in a universe of information, opinion and stories. They need to be able to input their own questions in that Google bar, and marshal information that matters to them, and that can change their lives.

The way we’ve taught reading until now does not match what the 21st century child needs to know, and to know what to do when navigating this complex and varied universe of information and opinion.

Imagine if you enrolled your child in a soccer tutorial and for three quarters of the hour long practice the coach described soccer using words instead of action. In place of drills or scrimmages, players were lectured on the precise angle to hold their foot when kicking the ball, or the theory behind a good offensive play. This is how reading has been taught for years in our schools. Teachers lecture about “reading comprehension strategies” and “decoding skills” instead of giving children the real and authentic opportunities to actually read from varied and meaningful resources in school. They are reading less than seven minutes every day, if that, independently, by the middle school grades.

With this in mind, the simplest solution and the key to stronger reading is to treat reading as practice. Teachers need to reduce the amount of time spent talking about the benefits of reading and allow students to sit down and read. It really is this simple. It is widely accepted that math aptitude comes from working through problems and exercises. It shouldn’t be hard to see then that the muscles for reading well are cultivated by absorbing words and practicing how to synthesize new ideas and new information for a new world.

Raising voracious, passionate readers means allowing children to take charge of their reading lives. A highly popular method for teaching reading is the “whole class novel” approach; it has never been proven effective by any measurable data but it is the single most common method for teaching reading anywhere in this country. Researchers (I have a particular affinity for the tireless work of Richard Allington on this subject) have been campaigning for years to say that reading at one’s own independent reading level is a dynamic and effective way to build students’ reading stamina, confidence and capacity for reading at higher levels.

What I am proposing is exquisitely simple, and therefore not costly. Children building capacity to read at and beyond their levels means they have to read from a deep variety of texts and for a wide variety of purposes, from a video game manual to a graphic novel to a blog on a subject of interest to the back of a cereal box to a classic canonic text. My idea is the converse idea to what has arisen from the ratcheting up of anxiety in our schools’ decision makers by poor data outcomes, who resort to the purchase of snake oil remedies when instead they could solve a very simple problem with a very simple solution. It’s as simple as this: children learn to read by reading. People get really good at what they do by doing it. Let’s bring reading back to the classroom.

Let’s let our children read.

Replacement Presents Donated To Children Who Accidentally Received Nude Photos

When he heard about the students at Jay Elementary School in Santa Rosa County, Fla. who accidentally received slap bracelets with nude photos beneath a cloth wrapping, Stuart Anders, the product’s inventor, lept into action.

Once school authorities realized the bracelets had inappropriate pictures printed on the metal, they attempted to collect them back from the students, who had earned them as a reward for their fundraising.

“It was one of those calls you get from parents where you say, ‘Really?’” Santa Rosa County School District spokesman Bill Emerson told Reuters. “Then it turns out to be true.”

Not wanting the children to be without their winnings, Anders shipped 200 of his original bracelet, or ‘”Slap Wrap,” to the school.

The bracelets confiscated from some of the elementary school students were received from a Nashville-based company, Reading for Education, LLC, who purchased them from China.

Texas History Education Standards Slammed In New Report

A recent report says Texas K-12 standards in history are inadequate, ineffective and “fail to meet the state’s college readiness standards,” and the report’s authors are pointing the finger at Gov. Rick Perry’s State Board of Education.

In the report, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Social Studies Faculty Collaborative say that Texas’ K-12 system is “founded upon an inadequate set of standards.” Keith Erekson, the author and history professor at the University of Texas at El Paso, analyzes in the report the entire process of Texas’ history standards — from board approval to the curriculum itself.

The report notes that the Fordham Institute gave the state’s history standards a grade of “D,” calling it a “politicized distortion of history,” that is “both unwieldy and troubling” while “offering misrepresentations at every turn.”

These misrepresentations, Erekson writes, include excluding Native Americans from the standards curriculum until recently and citing states’ rights as a cause of the Civil War when Texas did not cite it in their historical “Declaration of Causes.”

The Texas State Board of Education last May adopted its most recent social studies and history curriculum that revises its teachings of the rationale for the separation of church and state, among hundreds of other topics. The curriculum underwent a contentious monthslong revision process, and will be used in Texas for the next 10 years.

Erekson’s report comes after a separate report by the Southern Poverty Law Center in September called education about the civil rights movement in the U.S. “dismal.” Just 2 percent of the 12,000 12th graders who took the 2010 National Assessment of Educational Progress U.S. History Exam were able to correctly identify two basic points about the historic Brown v. Board of Education case to earn a score of “complete.”

The NAEP also released a report in June that showed dismal history test scores in what U.S. Secretary of Education called an impending “slow-motion train wreck”: just 9 percent of 4th graders could identify a photograph of Abraham Lincoln and state two reasons for his importance.

“People tend to think that history is only memorizing facts,” Linda Salvucci, vice chair of the National Council for History Education, told HuffPost. “More importantly, it’s a way of thinking and organizing the world.”

Texas’ failures, as well as the poor national performance, contribute to a low level of college readiness among the state’s high school students, to the extent that Erekson’s report says college readiness was almost completely ignored in Texas’ revised history standards, “Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills” — presenting history as a series of factual memorization and one-sided analysis.

“These examples are not meant to say that the TEKS do not contain any bright spots,” Erekson writes. “The examples are meant to illustrate a widespread pattern of neglect of college readiness skills. No student will succeed in college or the workplace if he confuses writings with speeches, conducts a one-sided analysis, or simply spits back a string of memorized information. No Texas parent would desire this for her child and no profit-minded Texas business leader would hire a graduate who had attained only these abysmal standards.”

The report also notes that In 2006, when the College Readiness Standards were created, 40 percent of Texas college students weren’t prepared. Last year, 48 percent of those entering community college and 14 percent of incoming college freshmen needed remedial courses in at least one subject, and the gap is only widening.

To remedy the standards and curriculum, Erekson offers a series of recommendations, including analytical thinking through making connections, evaluating historical arguments, engaging in modern debates and drawing global comparisons, pointing to and utilizing primary sources as well as even directly challenging the TEKS by pointing out their controversies and omissions.

National figures released in August echo the Texas readiness report: just 25 percent of ACT test-takers met college preparedness standards for English, math, reading and science, whereas nearly one-third didn’t meet any of those standards. And now, parents and students are looking to new and alternative ways of college remediation.

New York’s High School Progress Reports released last month revealed that just a quarter of students graduating from New York City high schools this year were prepared for college coursework, and fewer than half of all students enrolled in college four years after entering high school.

Talk Nerdy To Me: Is Sex For Pleasure Uniquely Human?

We are apes. We are animals. We are made of the same organic molecules as all life. We metabolize. We procreate. We die. But we are also human beings. We have language and culture. We self-reflect and ponder the future. We have medicine. We use advanced tools, like televisions, smart phones, and computers.

We also have sex.

We have a lot of sex. In human culture, sex is so much more than a means of reproduction. Sex is emotional. Sex is communicative. Sex is fun. And when it comes down to it, for most of us, sex just feels good. We have sex for pleasure significantly more often than we have sex for reproductive purposes. Is this one of those things that makes us uniquely human?

Well, here’s where things get complicated. How do we know what feels good to an animal? It’s not like they can tell us. Perhaps all animals have sex for pleasure. Perhaps we are all hard-wired to experience pleasurable feelings during the act of sex for the very purpose of procreation. I sincerely doubt that most animals are aware of the fact that sex leads to offspring. They probably do it because it feels good. Science has done a pretty good job of exploring and explaining precisely how sex feels so good to us. But answering the question of why it feels so good is seems to be a matter of conjecture. Granted, if it didn’t feel good, we might not do it. And if we didn’t do it, there wouldn’t be any of us here to have this discussion.

One indication that animals enjoy sexual activity is the act of masturbation. We’ve all seen our dogs do it. Male dogs will pretty much hump anything they can wrap their legs around. Masturbation in horses is also quite common. There’s even a seminal (no pun intended) paper on squirrel masturbation. In fact, a lot of animals go solo. Birds, walruses, sheep, turtles, elephants, bears, and many more species have been observed engaging in autoeroticism. Porcupines have even been witnessed to fashion vibrators out of sticks. Interestingly, although all of these animals have been documented to play with themselves, it is exceedingly rare that they actually get off. That is, masturbation to the point of orgasm/ejaculation appears to be a fluke outside of the human species (except maybe in squirrels).

What makes us so different that our masturbatory experiences are “goal-oriented” when other animals’ are not? And why is our masturbation frequency significantly higher than that of other species? Jesse Bering hypothesizes that it is because humans have the unique ability to form mental representations of erotic material. It may be the case that what sets us apart is our ability to write, produce, edit, and even star in our own mental porn.

I know that masturbation may not be considered sex, per se. You’ve probably heard the rumors that dolphins are the only other mammals that have sexual intercourse for pleasure. It appears as though this is almost true, depending again on how one defines sex for pleasure. Dolphins have been observed to have sex during all stages of the female menstrual cycle, not just ovulation. But, as they have been apt to do lately, our favorite ape relatives, the bonobos, have to be included in this conversation. Bonobos get it on year round as well. As far as I know, no other animal species has been documented to engage in full-on intercourse even when females aren’t in heat. So in a way, when our thoughts and behaviors are dominated by non-stop, year-round sexual urges, we aren’t really acting on animalistic impulses. We are doing something that is almost uniquely human. If we were to actually “do it like they do on the Discovery channel,” we’d only be getting it on a few days each month. So the next time I hear somebody quote a particular Nine Inch Nails song (you know the one), I’ll remember that I’d rather do it like a human, thank you very much.

WATCH: Amazing Venezuelan Youth Orchestra Stuns America

LOS ANGELES — Gustavo Dudamel stands off to the side of an orchestra of T-shirt clad teens as they laboriously rehearse Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5. He’s listening, not just with his ears, but also with irrepressible fingers that tap and pluck the air as if he’s actually conducting the piece.

At the end, he hops on to the conductor’s podium and, beaming at his rapt pupils, demonstrates that the difference between playing music and performing it is passion.

“Be wild, like the pop music,” the 30-year-old music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic exhorts as he pantomimes a spirited sweep of a violin bow as the kids chuckle. “I know, I am always a pain for all the orchestras.”

Dudamel’s ebullient style of conducting, which sends his long dark curls bouncing as he gestures, has made him the rock star of the classical realm. He flits among concert halls on three continents and runs on a schedule that allots time down to 10-minute segments, but reserves an occasional Saturday morning to coach kids in a program that brings Beethoven to the barrios.

It was the original program in his native Venezuela, known as El Sistema – the System – that discovered his own musical talent at age 10.

With Dudamel at the forefront, Los Angeles has emerged as the national flagship of the U.S. version of the System, El Sistema U.S.A, which in just four years has grown to encompass programs in more than 50 cities.

Under the aegis of the Philharmonic, Los Angeles has the biggest Venezuelan-inspired initiative, enrolling some 500 mostly minority children in two neighborhoods where music is more likely to mean hip-hop than Hayden.

Next year the Philharmonic is stepping up its commitment by launching a teaching center to train instructors in the distinctive El Sistema method, which provides intensive musical training in way that enhances children’s self-esteem.

The initiative, which also includes adding a third neighborhood program somewhere in Los Angeles County in 2013, has now become part of the Philharmonic’s mission, said Deborah Borda, president and chief executive of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

“We have an artistic imperative, but we have a social imperative, as well,” she said.

It is perhaps only fitting that Los Angeles has taken the baton, since Dudamel is a dynamo behind El Sistema’s global expansion and its star graduate. He is also one of more than 400,000 mostly underprivileged children who have received free music lessons in Venezuela.

The government-funded National System of Youth and Children’s Orchestras of Venezuela, as the $60 million-a-year program is formally called, has existed for 36 years, but it’s only been in the last four years – as Dudamel’s profile has risen on the global stage – that it’s started to accelerate internationally.

El Sistema-style programs have since taken root from Australia to Great Britain as the movement has stirred the social conscience of the stuffy classical world and given a new impetus to a musical genre many see as elitist.

“It’s sort of given us all new hope that classical music can be relevant and vital again,” said Tricia Tunstall, author of the forthcoming book, “Changing Lives: Gustavo Dudamel, El Sistema and the Transformative Power of Music” to be published by W.W. Norton in January.

That is, well, music to the maestro’s ears.

“My main goal, and it’s a big one, is that every child has a chance to get close to music, as a right, as they have access to food, health, education, they get the chance to have art and culture, especially music,” said Dudamel in an interview.

The secret of El Sistema’s success lies in making music a community experience that’s fun, said Eric Booth, a consultant to El Sistema U.S.A.

Pupils are taught almost entirely in a group setting with an intensive practice schedule of four to five days a week, as opposed to most Western music instruction, often comprised of individual lessons once a week.

About five instructors rove among the orchestra, correcting individual mistakes as the ensemble learns a musical piece as a whole. “Every child must be felt to be considered an asset,” Booth said. “It never feels like work. It’s pleasurable for them to be working together. It’s a palpable feeling.”

For 13-year-old cellist Jacob Esquivel, playing in an orchestra makes music more meaningful than solo lessons. “I was fascinated to see all the instruments come together,” he said. “It makes you excited.”

The method, which has produced several world-class musicians, has professionals from all over the world studying how to replicate it.

El Sistema “can develop individual musicians of tremendous virtuosity and at the same time develop music for all these children,” Tunstall said. “That’s a fantastic thing to pull off and very difficult. Everyone is wondering how they keep that balance.”

In the Youth Orchestra Los Angeles program, children from two to 17 can enroll to receive free instruments and intensive lessons. They start playing in the orchestra from age six. The program, which has a waiting list of 200 children, is paid for by the Philharmonic and several partner organizations.

The Philharmonic does not release the cost of the orchestra program, but spends over $1 million on education a year. The new teaching training program will cost about $1 million, to be shared with Longy School of Music in Cambridge, Mass.

Violinist Samantha Rosas, 13, who lives in South Los Angeles, said her family could never afford music lessons so she jumped at the chance to join up four years ago.

Now music has become such a passion that her parents warn they’ll take it away if her grades fall. It works, she said: “If I don’t get to go to orchestra, that’s really threatening to me.”

Parents say they never have to push their kids, even though practice can be a grueling schedule of 11 to 17 hours a week.

“They figure out a way to make it fun,” said Peter Esquivel, Jacob’s father. “It doesn’t become work to them.”

That sense of having a good time is evident in a recent rehearsal with Dudamel, who is music director for Sweden’s Gothenburg Symphony and the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela in addition to his Los Angeles post.

Wearing jeans and an old sweater, he wields humor as much as his baton to coax a more animated performance out of the middle-school musicians. According to the changing tempo of the Brahms piece, he acts like a forlorn lover, prancing ballerina, an angry boyfriend, and an elegant ballroom dancer.

“It’s like to be in the party with different characters,” he said, warning the kids his English “is not better.”

For Dudamel, working with the kids brings back his own youth learning violin in the dusty heat of central-western Venezuela. By the end of the session, the kids played with a lot more verve.

“Wow, have been a huge change,” Dudamel said. “This is dangerous. I want more.”

Neil J. Young: Our Father? The Religious Battle Over School Prayer

In Florida, the state’s Senate Education Committee recently forwarded a bill on school prayer to state lawmakers for consideration. Proposed by Democratic Sen. Gary Siplin of Orlando, the bill would allow student-led prayers at school events like graduation, dances and football games. Since the U.S. Supreme Court banned prayer and other devotional activities in public schools in the early 1960s, dozens of states have circumvented the law by passing legislation similar to that proposed in Florida this month. In the decades-old battle over prayer in schools, the media and politicians alike have painted the scuffle as an intransigent standoff between secular atheists and religious traditionalists. But the history of school prayer reveals that religious Americans have often been at the forefront of keeping prayer out of the nation’s public schools.

Long before the Supreme Court declared school prayer as unconstitutional in the 1962 decision Engel v. Vitale, religious devotion and instruction in public schools remained a controversial issue among people of faith. Nineteenth century Catholics objected to the Protestant prayers and hymns their children had to recite each morning, and they opposed the use of the King James Bible for Scripture lessons because canon law prohibited Catholics from reading that translation. Many Catholics removed their children from the public school system in favor of Catholic private schools for just this reason, but those left behind often suffered brutally. In Boston, for example, school officials severely beat a young Catholic boy who refused to recite the Protestant version of the Ten Commandments in 1859.

A century later when the Supreme Court outlawed public school prayers and devotionals, many states had already banned the practice. Still, the Court’s decision sent shock waves through the country. But religious leaders, especially from evangelical corners, expressed mixed sentiments. Prominent pastors like Billy Graham and Billy James Hargis denounced the ruling, but the Southern Baptist Convention’s president hailed the decision as “one of the greatest blessings to those of us who believe in the absolute separation of church and state.” The National Association of Evangelicals and Christianity Today, the nation’s leading evangelical publication, both supported the Court’s ruling as well, citing the First Amendment.

Of course, many evangelicals and other religious Americans believed the Supreme Court had overstepped its bounds, and a political movement to pass a School Prayer Amendment quickly coalesced. Yet ever since, religious Americans, rather than secularists, have stood in the way of restoring prayers to public classrooms. For example, during the 1960s the Becker Amendment, which would have amended the Constitution to allow school prayer, met its demise in the Senate when a cadre of evangelicals from conservative denominations like the Missouri-Synod Lutheran Church and the Southern Baptist Convention testified before a subcommittee against the bill. Evangelicals who opposed the amendment worried that if the bill passed, students from a minority faith might be subjected to the prayers or scriptures of a state or district’s majority faith. Christianity Today, in explaining its objection to the Becker Amendment, fretted that evangelical students in the northeast or Intermountain West might have to recite a Hail Mary or read from the Book of Mormon.

This concern over the particulars of competing faiths has consistently undermined efforts to return prayer to public schools. During the 1980s, social conservatives hoped that President Reagan would deliver on a litany of cherished political objectives, including a school prayer amendment. Given the conservatism of the era and the newfound power of the nascent religious right movement, such an outcome seemed likely. But yet again, the bid for a school prayer amendment was upended by devout Christians rather than liberal secularists. Unable to agree over language for a potential school prayer amendment — there were spirited battles over whether the amendment should call for “nondenominational” or “nonsectarian” prayers or leave such decisions to the states — Christian conservatives divided into various camps and failed to give unified backing to any proposed legislation. Once again, a school prayer amendment had died at the hands of Christian conservatives.

In the years since the Reagan administration, school prayer advocates have fared better at the local and state level. By passing legislation allowing school prayer and Bible readings at school events rather than in classroom activities, these activists have found ways around the Supreme Court’s ban. Not surprisingly, these laws have faced opposition from groups like the ACLU, but Christians of various stripes have also expressed their distaste for such legislation. In the heavily Southern Baptist small town of Santa Fe, Texas, as the legal scholar Peter Irons has written about, a group of Catholic and Mormon families banded together to sue their school district over the offering of evangelical prayers voiced over the loudspeaker before school football games. When the case eventually reached the Supreme Court in 2000, the Court agreed that the prayers were a violation of the Establishment clause. In his dissent, Chief Justice William Rehnquist, joined by Justices Scalia and Thomas, declared that the majority decision “bristles with hostility to all things religious in public life.” But as in so many cases with the issue of school prayer, the real objections came not from secular humanists but from devout believers who endured discrimination for their minority religious status. Though various evangelical churches throughout Santa Fe had posted signs on their lawns proclaiming “God’s on Our Side,” the Catholic and Mormon families believed just as much that their cause had divine sanction. Upon hearing that the Supreme Court had ruled in their favor, one Mormon mother dropped to her knees and offered up a prayer, “Thank God, thank God.”

Such sentiments may ultimately doom Sen. Siplin’s bill in Florida. One Jewish group, as reported by Tampa’s WTSP, has already expressed concern that the legislation “will be used to impose majority religious beliefs on minority faiths.” If history is any guide, other religious Floridians will likely soon join in on the fight to keep prayer out of the state’s public schools.

High School Football Coach Issued Shockingly Offensive ‘Hurt Feelings’ Survey

An embattled high school football coach in Wyoming has resigned following an incident where he handed out an offensive survey, titled “Hurt Feelings Report,” to his student athletes before a game last month that included sexist and anti-gay language.

The Johnson County school board has accepted head coach Pat Lynch’s resignation, but Lynch will keep his job as a guidance counselor at Buffalo High School under administrative supervision, the Casper Star-Tribune reports.

“[Lynch] screwed up, he screwed up big time,” Superintendent Rod Kessler told the Star-Tribune. “The coaching, we didn’t want that to be the issue anymore. We wanted him to have his priority back where it was a counselor. None of us are happy that it happened. It’s a black eye to the district. And it’s a black eye to Pat.”

The school board learned of the incident through word of mouth and community response, KTWO reports. Lynch had coached the team for 14 years. Despite some pushback from the community for the decision to keep Lynch employed at the school, the board is standing behind Lynch and their decision.

“We’re going to work on building his reputation back to where it needs to be,” Kessler told KTWO.

Neither the board nor Lynch have addressed the former coach’s reasons for handing out the survey.

A reader-submitted image of the “Hurt Feelings Report” to KTWO reveals the extent of the questionnaire.

WARNING: The survey contains lewd language. Discretion is advised.

Under a list of reasons for filing the “Hurt Feelings Report,” the survey offers choices including “I am a pussy,” “I have woman like hormones,” “I am a queer” and ‘I am a little bitch.” It asks for the “name of ‘Real Man’ who hurt your sensitive little feelings,” “name little sissy filing this report.” and the filer’s “girly-man signature.”

Lynch submitted a letter of apology to board members with his resignation. From the Buffalo Bulletin:

“I would like to apologize for my lack of judgment and the poor choice that I made from my position as head football coach for Buffalo High School. I know that this situation has caused you pain and discomfort, and for that I am truly sorry. As a person and a professional, I believe I will learn and grow from this experience and use it to help others.”

“I appreciate having had the opportunity to coach in this community for the past 22 years. It has been a rewarding experience. I am eager to earn back your trust as I continue to serve in a profession that I truly love.”

Still, some parents are upset. Wayne Jensen, who has a son on the Buffalo football team, said Lynch should have apologized directly to his student athletes.

“Everybody should be accountable for their actions,” Jensen told the Star-Tribune. “He came out with a letter and apologized to the school board. Well, I never heard one mention of the kids.”

In a separate incident involving contentious questionnaires at school, a New Mexico teacher is on leave for allegedly issuing an offensive sex survey to students. Although the students later spoke out admitting to issuing the survey themselves, the teacher remains on paid leave.

Quick Poll

Should the school board have kept Lynch as a counselor?

State Senate Backs Bill Requiring Pledge Of Allegiance In Schools

A bill that requires every Michigan public school student to start the day by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance has been approved by the state Senate.

The Republican led Senate passed the bill Thursday 31-5 that carries two provisions: requiring students to recede the pledge and mandating that every public school purchase a flag for each of its classrooms. The school board would also be required to ensure that those flags are displayed.

The bill does note, however, that a student “shall not be compelled” to participate against objections by the student or the student’s parents.

Michigan is one of seven states in the country that doesn’t have a law requiring the pledge’s recitation every day, according to The Grand Rapids Press.

The was introduced by Republican Sen. Roger Kahn, who says that starting the school day with the pledge is an important expression of love for the country.

“Saying the pledge is a reminder of the sacrifices made by so many Americans over the generations,” Kahn told The Grand Rapids Press.

Kahn has also introduced a separate measure that would require all U.S. flags and Michigan state flags flown over public buildings to be made in the U.S.

“It’s common sense that U.S. flags should be made in America,” Kahn said in a statement Thursday. “I firmly believe our nation’s symbols should be American-made, and that is why I sponsored this measure.”

State Sen. Hoon-Yung Hopgood was one of the five lawmakers who voted against the bill that requires the pledge, telling Michigan Radio that he doesn’t believe patriotism comes from a mandate.

“One of the things I said is that I love my country, not because I say the pledge, but because I say the pledge because I love my country,” Hopgood told Michigan Radio.

The bill now advances to the state House.

Nebraska state Sen. Tony Fulton has also expressed intent to introduce a bill in the Nebraska Legislature in January nearly identical to Kahn’s bill in Michigan.

Schools in Nebraska are currently required to display flags, and while the pledge is common practice, it’s not required. Fulton’s bill would make both required by state law, the Lincoln Journal Star reports.

In a separate move, the Brookline Political Action for Peace in Massachusetts has called for a ban on students reciting the pledge in public schools, saying it has no educational value and is reminiscent of totalitarian regimes.
